Subiaco Abbey & Academy has unveiled a new Military Honor Roll in Alumni Hall, an interactive tribute to our graduates and monks who have served in the United States Armed Forces. What began in 2022 as a simple alumni directory has grown into a permanent, hands-on experience that invites students, families, and visitors to discover individual stories of service, courage, and leadership.

What you will see

The display spans eight feet by four feet and features a 32-inch touch-screen where visitors can browse entries by name, class year, branch, dates of service, conflicts, and distinctions. The installation was built on campus by our maintenance team, with hand-crafted lettering and a crucifix by our master woodworker Br Jude and official service emblems completing the design. It is intended to evolve over time, adding photographs and short bios that bring each name to life.

Why it matters

Subiaco’s Benedictine formation teaches discipline, prayer and work, teamwork, humility, and service. Those habits of life have resonated with generations of alumni who chose military service. The Honor Roll lifts up that legacy for our current students and for the thousands of families who have been part of Subiaco for nearly 150 years.

Highlights

The Military Honor Roll includes a wide range of eras and experiences. Among them is a 1949 alumnus, a Marine and Korean War veteran recognized with the Silver Star, Bronze Star, and two Purple Hearts who later served as an ambassador of peace, and a Vietnam War alumnus who gave his life saving members of his squad, honored on campus with a dedicated plaza. Entries span across the country, with many graduates from Arkansas and Texas and alumni living nationwide. A number of monks are also included.

Built by and for the Subiaco community

From fundraising to design feedback, the Class of 1967 has been a driving force behind this project. Their leadership helped expand the vision from a directory to an immersive, on-campus experience. The result is a tribute built with Subiaco craftsmanship, grounded in Benedictine values, and shaped by alumni.
